Women’s Group

April 3rd, 2007

So I went to my first women’s group meeting last night. I’m definitely glad to be part of the group, but it was definitely unlike any meeting I’d ever been to. First of all, it’s not really an AA meeting, but a 12 step meeting. And it’s more like a class environment where  they take “roll” and we must call at least one member each week. There are study sheets, homework, and pot lucks. Very different. Of course, in my book different is always a good thing.

Real Simple’s “Special” Family, uh not so simple

April 8th, 2006

Get it all done with time to spare: smart solutions for busy parents.

I was really looking forward to this special issue. I love Real Simple. I love all the little lifehacks, tips, and product reviews in every issue. Honestly, though, I was a little disappointed and just slightly offended by this issue. Yes, it was chock full of awesome ideas for organizing families and family time. But, really, the whole idea of SuperMom is bullshit and so last century. We can’t do everything. And trying to do everything is exactly how I ended up in rehab. To do everything on our lists we need to re-prioritize and make the fucking list shorter. SHORTER.

Every “organized” mom featured in the mag was either a stay-at-home mom (which is awesome for them, but I can’t really relate) or is able to rearrange work schedules so they are at home. Obviously, the had the bucks, too. Which leads me to one of my big fat pet peeves: how do normal, every day peeps get to care about the environment, have thriving families, and have healthy work lives and stay sane and not break the bank? Hmmmm?

Fire Thunder in South Dakota

March 29th, 2006

From Democracy Now’s website and podcast:

South Dakota Abortion Ban Draws Fiery Opposition from Native Americans — Cecilia Fire Thunder, President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota, recently made waves when she said a clinic on the Pine Ridge reservation could provide abortions if South Dakota’s new abortion ban goes into effect. The ban is set to go into effect July 1st. It would prohibit all abortions except to save the life of the mother – with no exceptions for rape or incest.

Team Angstylvania

February 13th, 2006

Team Angstylvania
I’ve applied for membership to Team Angstylvania. I’m hoping they’ll accept me as a late entry, even though I admittedly suck at crafts. I heard about Renee and Zabet’s very cool webzine, The AntiCraft, from the CraftSanity podcast. It amazes and inspires me that there are so many clever, funny, crafty, talented women out there. I’m so glad to have found both CraftSanity and The AntiCraft.

Happy Birthday, Grandma and Goodbye, Betty.

February 8th, 2006

From CNN.com - Betty Friedan, philosopher of modern-day [tag]feminism[/tag], dies - Feb 4, 2006

[tag]Betty Friedan[/tag] made a direct impact on my life because her book made a profound difference to how my grandmother lived her life. From my grandma and my mother I learned that a woman can choose her path and not have it dictated by society or pre-determined by tradition. Because of women like Betty Friedan and my grandma, I have options. So to both women I say thank you. And to my awesome and amazing grandma I say:

Happy Birthday! I love you!
