“Sick” Day
On the one day that my village isn’t around to help run my life and take care of my kids, my son needs to be picked up from school. Apparently, he’s come down with some kind of horrible stomachache that prevents him from doing school work for a mere 3 more hours. My only option was to quickly pick him up and park him in the corner of my office. I felt terrible about it (bad Mommy!) until I looked over and realized that I might have been duped. He has his portable DVD player (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), the dog (the super sweet Gracie May), his favorite sleeping bag, and some Lunchables (usually forbidden in our house because they are disgusting). Hmmmm. I think I’ve been had.
Bath time
A moment in time: last night, my son was taking his bath and my daughter was playing with her dolls while keeping him company. My son had his iPod on the speakers and they were listening to the Ramones (the undisputable founders of American punk…ok, fine, IMHO!). I know I’m a silly ole mama, but it made my heart warm to see them dancing and playing and getting along all to the tune of “Sheena is a Punk Rocker.
On another musical note, can you believe that it’s been 29 years since Elvis Presely passed away? I’ll never forget that day. So sad. RIP, Elvis.

The child that lives and breathes horses finally got her first pony ride at a local working farm. We met my aunt, my cousin and my cousin’s daughter and had a great time being mauled by overfed goats, donkeys, and shirt-eating deer. Good times, good times! ![]()
Thankful
Today I am thankful that my Mighty Man Max is finally feeling better. When you have a robust, boucing-off-the-walls kid like Max get sick for a week it’s a little disoncerting. He’s had fever, couging, the whole shebang. And it sucked. But I think we’re finally coming out the other end of it. His fever is gone and his cough is getting better. I took him to the doc yesterday…basically, because I’m an extremely paranoid mother. So, all is well in my little world.
And I’m still sober.
Of course.
The Knitting Olympics
Here on my 11 month anniversary of [tag]sobriety[/tag] and my 4th week of [tag]knitting[/tag], I think I’m ready (not) to take on the [tag]Knitting Olympics[/tag]. Since the project needs to be complete by the end of the real [tag]Olympics[/tag] I’ve decided to knit a darling little purse for Princess Baby Monster’s 3rd birthday. Cool, huh?

Christmas Eve,
originally uploaded by rustykeller.
All I need to do is look at this picture for one single second and I’m instantly reminded why my recovery is so important. Look at their darling faces; they’re so happy and full of the promise of the next day. I’m so blessed.
Checking in
I’m still here. Still sober at 9 months! Madly dashing here and there, trying to be super-medicore-mom while trying to juggle Christmas tasks, work, and child rearing responsibilities. I’m a little tired (I have that crappy cold that’s going around), but feeling pretty stable and happy. Max’s Holiday program at school last night was amazing. He wasn’t fidgeting (or picking his nose) and he sang all the right words (no “Batman smells, Robin laid an egg…”). I was so proud I thought my heart might explode.
This weekend we’re caroling over at my Grandma’s complex with the cub scouts. That should be a friggin’ hoot, considering how cold it is here and how much we haven’t practiced our songs. Good, clean, Christmas fun.
Anyway, I have tons of stuff to talk about but no time to do it. So, this is just a quick check in mommyblogging entry. ![]()
267 Days
Can that be? I have not had a drink with alcohol in 267 days. Holy shit, I’m a friggin’ miracle. I love AA. I love my life.
On another topic, it’s snowing and raining out here in the lovely Pacific Northwest. I think it’s called sleet. It’s cold. And slushy. And cold. Do I really want to drag the kids out tomorrow night into the frozen slushy tundra for the local tree lighting and parade? Max really, really wants to ride his little float with our little cub scout pack. But it’s so, uh, cold.
BTW, in case you were wondering, I suck at sewing patches. Max’s appreciation is wonderful, but it doesn’t make me a better patch sewer.

I think that the long dead spirit of a cub scout den mother has taken over my body. I have become the queen of cub scouting. WTF was I thinking when I naively raised my hand and said “I think Committe Chairperson sounds fun!” Silly, silly woman.
So now we’re selling Christmas trees down the road for three days in the hopes that we’ll raise some dough for our new little pack. In all seriousness, I hope we’re able to pull this off because I really would like our pack to be the kind of community group that families know that ALL boys are welcome…regardless of whether or not they can afford the outings, supporting materials or uniform. Keep your fingers crossed for us this weekend! ![]()
Happy Halloween!
Originally uploaded by Rusty.
We had a fantastic Halloween that last over a week, starting with the Fall Festival at school and ending with some great trick-or-treating in town. The kids were darling as Harry Potter and Dorothy and had a great time. I have a feeling they’ll be jacked up on sugar for days…hopefully, they’ll be able to fall asleep by this weekend!
As a side note, we went to a very community-oriented Trunk or Treat where we dressed up our trunk and handed out candy to kids. It was great fun. We handed out little treat bags from The Toymaker’s website. I felt very Martha.
