Sliced Pickles (or post-wls alcoholics)
I get emails from distraught and frightened people each week that are discovering they are no longer in control of their lives and are suddenly not able to stop drinking. These people are usually going through an extraordinary physical and psychological transition after having undergone some form of weight loss surgery. Most of the emails indicate there is no prior problems with alcohol. All of the emails/comments I receive indicate overwhelming fear and loss of hope. While I try to respond to every inquiry, if only to offer a little experience, strength, and hope, but I think the need for fellowship is much greater than a few pithy words on a blog urging people to go to AA. Frankly, though, I’m not sure what I should do. Should I petition surgeons to do more research and better educate their patients? Should I write a book? Should I keep quiet or start an anonymous blog for discussion? Should I start a forum where affected individuals can share their stories and give encouragement? What do you think? If you are interested in a forum, I have set one up on Ning, but it’s still private so you need to email me at rusty at marchnine dot com for an invite.
Let me know what you think about getting the word out and how we can help eachother.
