Fire Thunder in South Dakota

March 29th, 2006

From Democracy Now’s website and podcast:

South Dakota Abortion Ban Draws Fiery Opposition from Native Americans — Cecilia Fire Thunder, President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota, recently made waves when she said a clinic on the Pine Ridge reservation could provide abortions if South Dakota’s new abortion ban goes into effect. The ban is set to go into effect July 1st. It would prohibit all abortions except to save the life of the mother – with no exceptions for rape or incest.

I have traveled though SD on my way to Yellowstone a few times. What they are doing there is totally scary.

Come on over to our site. Tom and I debated a guy on this issue for several hours. In truth he did pretty good, although he never stayed on topic. He ended by suggesting that some people were pretending to be American Indian to get the BIG Casino money. He also accused me of being racist and bashing white people. Kind of hard to do when you are white, but whatever. It was a good time.
