Gerberererer Daisies My family has been making a slow, but steady progression away from keeping up with Jones’ and working towards becoming (sometimes kicking and screaming)  a happy and well family that believes in loving the planet, keeping things simple, and getting real.  I’m still a working parent that makes a living trying to get people to believe they need my product to make their businesses thrive. I still let my kids watch Blu-Ray movies and play video games. I will not stop dyeing my hair (I’m getting a pink streak in honor of my 40th birthday next week…so there). I wear makeup. I still have 2 cars (3, if you count the POS commuter we bought for almost nothing). Sometimes I even forget my reusable bags and have to get paper or plastic at the grocery story. But (big BUT), for the most part, we are trying to do our share to lessen the load and lighten our footsteps on our overworked Mother Earth. And we’re trying to do it without becoming environmental elitists (because, dude, we just don’t have the money for that route) or biting off more than we can chew.

How does a post-consumerist, reformed brand nazi, shoe loving, gadget toting, Mom of the Millennium make amends to our planet, become a frugal rock star and start back on the green and narrow?

Country yard My families’ Earth Day 2009 pledge is to start composting and get our organic veggie garden up and growing. I’d like to keep both projects simple and easy to maintain. I know that all worthwhile endeavors take time and effort, but I would like the kids (and me) to enjoy and look forward to working in our little veggie garden and creating rich soil from scraps and clippings. I’m going to take pictures and share our little journey here. Below are some of the resources I’ve found to get us started on our projects this weekend:

In light of all the scary news we’re seeing in the media today, I would like to remind you to search within in yourself to find the beauty waiting there. Life is not without its struggles (does Cobra really have to cost $1000/mo?) and hurdles, but I refuse to be defined by my pain and failures. My life is filled with beauty regardless of whether or not the stock market tanks today. My dear friend, Pat, sent me this slide show and I would like to share it with you:

So my biggest problem has always been laziness. And low self esteem. Laziness and low self esteem. Those two character traits combined can turn procrastination into an art form. At times, I have been paralyzed by it. At worst, it’s helped to create a myriad of disorder and financial chaos around me. To battle [...]

Now would be a good time to buckle your seat belt, simplify, and hold tightly to those you love most. It’s time, my friends, to relearn gratitude and appreciation for the things we do have. Fear leads to terror, so let’s practice hope and generosity.  This collective change that we are somehow impacted by can [...]

Can I get an “amen,” my friends? Seriously, I’m sure god has better things to do than listen to our political ads and bartering, but this lead in line from a news article this morning gives me more joy than anything:
The turn-out was record high. The voters: a rich palate of American diversity [...]

Okay, I know it’s time for me to suck it up, put on the big girl undies, and come out of the closet as an Obama supporter. Let the permanent record show that I will alway be a tried and true card carrying Clinton supporter.  F o r e v e r . But…big butt…I [...]

Some days I’ll be going along, minding my own business and I’ll suddenly be overwhelmed by the saddness that I can’t drink. Normal people don’t think like that. They don’t dress their kids for school, get to work, and suddenly it pops into their head that they’d really love a shot of tequila. Usually, it [...]

I haven’t heard from my sponsee in almost 3 weeks. She won’t return my calls or text messages. She dropped off the radar as soon as she decided to take a fulltime caregiver job. Everyone thought it was a great idea; everyone but me. Such is life. I won’t give up, but I can’t help [...]

I had the privelage and honor of escorting an old dear friend back into the program yesterday.  She seems open and completely willing to participate in her recovery this time around. The hope and love in her children’s and husband’s eyes is obvious. I’m so glad I can be there for her. I missed her [...]

The lead in for the current Faces and Voices of Recovery newsletter I received today is:
Last night, the US Senate passed The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act as part of The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act on a vote of 74 to 25.
Obviously, I’m all for the measure, but [...]

Let us rise up and be thankful,
for if we didn’t learn a lot today,
at least we learned a little,
and if we didn’t learn a little,
at least we didn’t get sick,
and if we got sick,
at least we didn’t die;
so, let us be thankful.

My wonderful great grandma, Wilma Ford, passed away on Saturday at the age of 102. She will be greatly missed. She was an amazing woman that always sent birthday cards (I’m almost 40 and she still continued to send her sweet well wishes), email (I love WebTv), and led an active life. I am sad [...]

I get emails from distraught and frightened people each week that are discovering they are no longer in control of their lives and are suddenly not able to stop drinking. These people are usually going through an extraordinary physical and psychological transition after having undergone some form of weight loss surgery. Most of the emails [...]

I’m struggling a little lately…maybe avoiding the work that needs to be done in order to take me to the next step in recovery. In working with my sponsee, I realize how much work I need to do of my own. Don’t get me wrong, I won’t drink…not today, anyway. Working as my home group’s [...]

For the record, today I am:

Saddened that our world has not become more peaceful in the years since the American tragedy of 9/11 and fearful about the state of our country
Thrilled that my son is adjusting well to his new school (and learning German. Dude!)
Excited and proud of my kindergartner and her adventurous spirit
Still in [...]

I received this in an email. Allegedly, this list is taken from the official minutes of the Wasilla Library Board and indicates the books that Sarah Palin requested be removed from the library. Even the Snopes listing that “debunks” the article only says that she wanted to ban the books and mentioned it publicly, but [...]

I will do what Hillary wants. But, for the record, I do not want to vote for Obama. I don’t think he’s qualified to be our president, nor do I trust him to bring strength and unity to our country. However, I fear McCain more than I dislike Obama. I fear more war and a [...]

  • Me. In a nutshell.

I'm a Sober Woman. Wife. Mother. Daughter. Serial Entrepreneur. ADD Crafter. Marketing Hack. Bleeding Heart Buddhist. Retro/Modern Jewelry Designer. Music Snob. Social Web Junkie.

This site discusses issues relevant to modern families trying to remove themselves from the traditional rat race by scaling back and trying to live a green, simple, and authentic life...without smelling like patchouli oil or resorting to raw-only foods!

I am so not a niche blogger. I touch on issues relating to productivity, politics, sobriety and recovery, knitting, technology, modern motherhood, wls (gastric bypass), business and marketing, education, ADHD, spirituality, music, and craft.

My other sites on the Web include my Facebook profile, my much neglected craft blog, Project Rusty, my jewelry design business, MarchNine, my LinkedIn profile, FriendFeed, and, of course, Twitter.
